THE CAREER MUM

'Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.' Brene Brown

I am Amanda Newman. I have had a successful 20-year IT career in one of the largest companies in the world. During that time, I have had 4 children including identical twin boys. As a so called ‘Career Mum’ I want to help women embarking on or during their own journey through the many challenges, decisions and the rewards.
The Career Mum will provide a unique mentoring resource for you, but also a resource for companies looking to embrace, understand and develop their vast network of talented women.
If you want to join the discussion, please join the group https://facebook.com/groups/TheCareerMum. I look forward to hearing from you.

Here’s what I’m loving this week

  • Over at The Career Mum we got involved in the #mumtakeover hosted by the BBC. Marina bravely shared her story of PND. Don’t skip this because you think the link isn’t relevant. It can impact any female...

So the title drew you in didn’t it... what’s the gossip? The constant news pings on my phone today of the engagement of a Prince Harry got me thinking about gossip and how many of us do it. However I wanted to take a moment to point out I don’t believe it’s appropriate...

Tonight I am sat anxiously hearing my twin babies cry. They are 20 months old and haven’t yet slept through the night. A typical night is 5-6 hrs sleep with 4-9 wakeups.

Tonight and for the next 4 nights I have hired a sleep coach Katie-Jane who has a 💯 success rate....

Do you have something you’ve been considering taking up, something you want to say, a process at work that needs to be fixed, a goal you want to reach?  Well what is stopping you? Here are my thoughts on making progress:

  • Don’t stop and think, jump in with both feet. I l...

Pearls of wisdom 23rd Nov 2017

I’ve struggled with my Pearls of wisdom this week. A combination of my sickness, my children’s sickness, my nanny’s sickness and finally my IT dept thinking I’d left the company and disabling my account left me having to cancel many meetin...

This blog may be controversial - or you may have more to add. If you do, come and join the discussion in our Facebook group The Career Mum

Over the last twenty years of my career, 90% of women have been supportive. However when you come across one that isn’t, I’m doubl...

Pearls of wisdom 16th Nov 2017

Here’s what I’m loving this week:

  • Are you behaving badly? Watch this clip and challenge yourself Bad Behaviour - Amanda Davie - surely we can all be kinder?

  • The Power of the Network - I set up the Facebook Group The Career Mum less than 2 we...

November 13, 2017

We’ve all had it, that moment where we imagine everyone is thinking ‘who the hell does she think she is?’. Our brain is telling us we are a fraud - we don’t belong in the discussion. Imposter syndrome. In the rapidly growing Facebook group The Career Mum I asked over 9...

November 10, 2017

My friend recently shared this clip with me Reese Witherspoon and I think it’s a brilliant analogy for why we need equality and diversity in business. If those films had women writing the script, they wouldn’t have that line. Reese explains that she went on to setup he...
